A Virtual Campus & Social Networking Environment for Indian Students
Have you ever faced an issue in your college days like missed an important assignment or an event? You must have hunted for information from your peers only to find out that its past the deadline. Do you regret and wish there was a way to know earlier? Imagine a notice board to seek information like assignments or upcoming academic events. Or a social media platform, for all students to connect, discuss, and exchange cultural or technical ideas. Would you not want such a platform or a notice board for all College-related activities?
That is why, a tech geek, Rohit Gupta started Campus Karma a virtual campus and a social networking environment for college students. He manages the site along with 20-30 campus ambassadors who promote Campus Karma in their colleges.
Campus Karma is India’s first college social networking site that combines technology with education. The website launch took place in October 2012, to resolve issues during college life for students. Moreover, with more than 35000 colleges in India, the scope is huge for a niche network for students.
As the name suggests, Campus Karma, connects the youth of India to provide them with all the campus news. It included activities in the past, those happening now as well as the ones scheduled in the future at different campuses. Teachers use it to share study material and improve communication. It engages students with posts related to academic events. The students can share campus related social and cultural philosophies among themselves.
Today, the website is much more than this. It contains an online aptitude program for students geared towards campus recruitment and competitive exams. Soon the website will open doors for budding app developers to showcase their apps for use and review. Campus Karma has a few hands-on workshops on the latest trending technology. It helps students with internship by helping them sharpen their skills. Some of the workshops include, Ethical hacking, Digital marketing, Cloud computing, Robotics, and the Internet of Things (IoT). An IoT workshop conducted recently for the first time turned out to be a huge success.
Students seeking admissions can read reviews, testimonials, articles, and video posts on the colleges. The key features of the website include Groups (the college group), Events, Labs (help enrich knowledge), and File repository (helps share study material). It has other services like Workshops (help conduct trainings and workshops), Blogs, Photos & Videos. The platform intends to bring all the college campuses in India on a single platform.
Traction so far
The Campus Karma website has 450+ colleges in the database, with 8500+ registered users. Their sales strategy is simple just organic reach and social media. Rohit intends to generate revenue via trainings and advertisements on the website. On Facebook, Campus Karma has 7710+ likes and 7600 followers.
In just four years, Campus Karma got shortlisted by NASSCOM’ 10,000 startups (phase 3). It is a member of Microsoft BizSpark Program and recognized by MindCron.com (2013), Startup India (2014), StartupFreak.com (2014), DD news (2015) and Biz Stories India (2015). The founder Rohit has just one piece of advice for all upcoming entrepreneurs “It is more important to start than to start right. Think about it. If you do not start your business, nothing will happen. Whatever it is that’s keeping you from launching is the everything you need to ignore or tackle head-on”.
